AI pricing traps: annual-only prices, seats and hidden tiers

The price on a pricing page is often the lowest possible one: billed yearly, per seat, before tax, sometimes in another currency. The monthly price you will actually pay can be much higher.

We graded each tool on how honestly its public pricing reflects what a US buyer pays, and flagged the traps we found.

Claude
$17/month (Pro, billed yearly at $200)
AThe pricing page shows every individual and team price in US dollars. It says plainly that prices exclude applicable taxes. Pro is $20 monthly or $17 a month on annual billing, which means $200 charged up front. Max ($100) and Ultra ($200) are monthly only. Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage at API rates, billed annually with a 20-seat minimum, so its real cost depends on how much you use. Source
HeadshotPro
$29 one-time
AIndividual packages are one-time USD payments of $29, $39 and $59, paid by card or PayPal, with no subscription to cancel. Team pricing is shown openly: $25.35 per shoot when buying 100 credits ($2,535), with automatic discounts from 20% at 5 credits up to 50% at 1,000 or more, and the page says discounts stack across lifetime purchases. Midjourney
$8/month (Basic, billed yearly at $96)
AThe plan comparison lists four tiers in US dollars: Basic $10, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120 a month. Annual billing knocks off 20%, with the full year paid up front ($96, $288, $576 and $1,152). Extra Fast GPU time costs $4 an hour on every plan. Every plan renews automatically until you cancel. There is no free trial on the website or in Discord; a limited trial exists only in the niji · journey mobile app. Source
ChatGPT
$8/month (Go, US price)
BUS prices are published, but not where you would expect. The pricing page adapts to your country and can show local currency, so the clearest dollar figures are in OpenAI's help center. There, Plus is $20/month, Pro tiers are $100, $200 and $500, and Business seats are $25 monthly or $20 billed annually. Go is quoted at $8 as an indicative US price that varies by market. Personal plans are monthly only, the terms say taxes are added where required, and Business requires at least two paid seats. Source
Cursor
$8/month (Plus; $80 billed yearly)
BPrices are public in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes. The pricing page shows monthly figures; the docs list the annual ones ($80, $300, $1,000 and $2,000). Two things raise the real cost: third-party models on Premium and above are billed at the model's API list price from prepaid credit, and Teams pay an extra 'Cursor Token Rate' of $0.25 per million tokens on eligible third-party requests. The pricing page names X Subscription Corp. as the seller, while the terms are with Anysphere, Inc. Source
Descript
$16/person/month billed yearly (Hobbyist; $24 month to month)
BPrices are public, in dollars and per person, with yearly billing advertised as saving up to 35% over monthly. Creator and Business seats are billed separately, so a three-person Creator team pays three times. The pricing page does not mention taxes, and paid plans are charged automatically to a card on the chosen cycle. Source
ElevenLabs
$5/month billed yearly (Starter; $6 month to month)
BEvery tier from Free to Business is listed in US dollars with monthly and yearly prices and the credit volume attached. Two things to read twice: the pricing page says prices exclude taxes, levies and duties, and the $1 and $11 first-month offers revert to the full price on renewal. The Terms also let ElevenLabs change prices; if you reject a change you must cancel at least 7 days before it takes effect. Source
Google Gemini
$4.99/month (Google AI Plus, US price)
BThe US subscriptions page lists every personal plan in dollars: AI Plus $4.99, AI Pro $19.99, and Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99 depending on whether you take 5x or 20x AI Pro usage. The plans are bundles, so storage, YouTube and Google Home perks come in the same price, which helps if you would buy them anyway. Google notes that local prices vary and that you must be 18 or older for Google AI plans. The page we read shows no annual option. Source
HeyGen
$24/month billed yearly (Creator; $29 month to month)
BPlans are listed in dollars with a yearly toggle advertised as '2 months free'. The pricing page does not name the billing currency. Two cost traps: Business seats cost $20 a month each but add no credits, since they share one pool, and the Pro plan is really a ladder of credit tiers from $49 (1,000 credits) to $4,300 (100,000 credits) a month. Source
Jasper
$59/month per seat, billed yearly
BPro is listed in USD at $69 per seat per month, or $59 per month billed yearly with a 12-month commitment, and includes one seat. Business is quote-only and starts with a 12-month commitment. Payment is by card only: the pricing page says Jasper does not accept PayPal or prepaid cards, and foreign currency conversion is applied by Stripe. A 20% nonprofit discount is available on request. Source
Synthesia
$14/month billed yearly (Starter; $19 month to month)
BSelf-serve plans are listed in dollars with monthly and yearly prices and credit volumes. Watch the introductory prices: Starter shows $9 and Pro $49 for the first month on monthly billing before reverting to $19 and $89. Each paid plan includes a single editor, with guests on top, so a team of creators quickly lands on Enterprise pricing. The page does not state currency or tax treatment. Source
Aragon AI
$35 one-time (headshots); app plans from $15/month
CHeadshot packages are listed in USD at $35, $45 and $75, each shown next to a higher figure ($44, $56, $94) under a '20% off all packages limited time only' banner, so the 'discount' is part of the standard display. The four app subscriptions ($15 to $249 a month) appear in the page's structured data, but the credit allowance behind each price did not show in the page text we could read. Source
Gamma
€8/seat/month billed annually (Plus; the pricing page lists euros, no USD list published)
CThe pricing page can show local currency outside the US, and the version we read listed euros for every individual plan, with 'Prices are subject to tax depending on your location'. We found no published USD list for Plus, Pro or Ultra. The one dollar figure in Gamma's own documents is in the help center, which prices Business at '$40 per member per month, billed annually'. Every paid plan is per seat, so each added member is billed at the plan rate, and Business is annual only. The page says annual billing saves 'up to 25%' while a help article says 28%. Source
GPTZero
$12.99/month billed $155.88 yearly (Premium)
CThe pricing page shows its individual plans as images, with $0 placeholders in the team widget, and can show local currency outside the US. The USD figures here come from GPTZero's own plan data as served to US visitors (archived October 27, 2026): Premium is $23.99 a month or $155.88 a year, Professional $45.99 or $299.88. Visitors elsewhere may see euros instead (€18.99 and €35.99 a month in the current data). The page advertises 'Annual (Save 45%)' while the team widget shows 'save 0%'. Teams need at least two seats and pay by card. Taxes are not mentioned. Source
Grammarly
$12/month billed yearly ($144/year)
CThe plans page shows Pro at $12 USD with no billing period beside it. Grammarly's own support article puts Pro at $30 per member per month, $60 per member per quarter, or $144 per member per year, so the headline figure is the yearly rate averaged out; paying monthly costs 2.5 times as much. Added seats are charged at the same rate, prorated for the rest of the billing period. Source
Magica
$12.50/month billed yearly ($14.99 month to month)
CPrices are public in USD: Hobby $14.99, Pro $100 and Max $200 a month, or $150, $1,000 and $2,000 a year (the page says save 17%). Teams costs $15 per user a month or $96 per user a year with a 5-seat minimum, but the seat fee covers platform access while AI credits are pay-as-you-go on top. Allowances are stated in millions of credits with no published price per task. Source
Otter.ai
$8.33/user/month (Pro, billed annually)
CPrices are in US dollars per user, but the cards mix list prices and promotions. Pro shows $16.99 a month with an asterisked $8.49 offer that the footnote limits to India-issued credit cards. Business shows $30 a month with a $24 promo for the first months via a promo code, and $19.99 a month on annual billing. Students and teachers with a .edu email get 20% off Pro ($6.67 a month billed $79.99 yearly, or $13.59 monthly). Pro caps a workspace at 5 billed users, Business at 25. The pricing page does not mention taxes. Source
Perplexity
$17/month (Pro, billed yearly)
CThe pricing page shows Pro at $17 and Max at $167 'per month or equivalent, billed annually', and does not show what either costs month to month. It also says the plans are for personal use only. Education Pro is $10 a month with SheerID verification, and Enterprise Pro starts at $40 per seat per month or $400 per seat per year. Limited-time promotions such as bonus Computer credits are displayed next to the prices, which makes the real price harder to compare. Source
Undetectable AI
$5/month (10K words, billed $60 yearly)
CPrices are public and in US dollars, but the page loads on the yearly view with the monthly figure struck through, so the headline numbers are annual commitments. The cheapest tier (10K words at $5/month, charged $60 a year) shows no monthly option, and the monthly price list starts at 20K words for $19. The 50K card shows $42.50 while the slider data lists $42, and its yearly total is not shown. A '6 Months Free' badge sits on that card without saying what it applies to. The page says nothing about sales tax. Source
InVideo AI
$4/seat/month billed yearly (Basic; $9 month to month)
DPrices are per seat in dollars, but the help centre says plans and prices differ by region, so what you see depends on where you are. On the page we read, the Basic yearly price appears as $4 in one place and $5 in another. Worst of all, the pricing FAQ says InVideo reserves the right to update credit costs at any time, without prior notice, so the value of a plan is not fixed. Source

Before you pay

  • Toggle the pricing page to monthly billing before comparing tools.
  • Team plans often have a minimum number of seats.
  • “Contact sales” plans are not comparable: ask for the price in writing.
