Our verdict
ChatGPT gives you strong output rights and clear US prices, but the refund policy is mostly 'no', and a personal account trains OpenAI's models until you switch that off. Plus at $20 is still the sensible default. The Pro tiers only make sense if you can actually burn through Codex and Work allowances that OpenAI measures at variable rates. Turn off 'Improve the model for everyone' on day one.
Good fit if you…
- Individuals who want one assistant for writing, research, images and code
- Small teams that need a no-training workspace (Business, 2 seats minimum)
- Anyone who wants clear ownership of what the model produces
Skip it if you…
- You expect a refund after the first week or after real use
- You want annual billing on a personal plan (there is none)
- You need a hard, published message count before you pay
The fine print, graded
Five questions, graded A (best for you) to E from OpenAI's own pages. How grades work.
Pricing clarity · Are prices public and free of traps?
US prices are published, but not where you would expect. The pricing page adapts to your country and can show local currency, so the clearest dollar figures are in OpenAI's help center. There, Plus is $20/month, Pro tiers are $100, $200 and $500, and Business seats are $25 monthly or $20 billed annually. Go is quoted at $8 as an indicative US price that varies by market. Personal plans are monthly only, the terms say taxes are added where required, and Business requires at least two paid seats.
SourceCancel & refunds · Can you leave, and get money back?
You can cancel any time and keep access to the end of the paid period, but the help center states that payments are generally non-refundable. A discretionary refund may be granted on an individual plan if you ask within seven days of the charge and have made no substantial use. Forgetting to cancel, dissatisfaction or a plan change do not qualify on their own, and there is no prorated refund after day seven. EU, UK and Turkey residents get a prorated refund within 14 days. Unused Business seats are generally not refunded for the committed period.
SourceLimits & credits · What is capped, and do credits expire?
No plan publishes a fixed message count. Plus 'may include usage limits such as message caps' that vary with demand, and 'unlimited' Pro access is subject to abuse guardrails. Speed modes eat your allowance faster: Fast mode counts at 2.5 times the standard rate and Ultrafast at 8 times. Credits bought on personal plans are valid for 12 months and then expire without rolling over. The API credits bundled with Pro expire at the end of each billing cycle, according to the pricing page footnote.
SourceYour data · Is your content used to train models?
On personal Free, Plus and Pro workspaces, 'Improve the model for everyone' is on by default, so your chats can train OpenAI's models until you turn it off. The opt-out is easy and keeps your history, but a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can still send that whole conversation to training. Voice mode and Codex environments have their own separate training switches. Temporary chats are not used for training and may be kept up to 30 days for safety. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces are not used for training by default.
SourceOutput rights · Can you use what you make commercially?
The US Terms of Use say you keep ownership of your input and own the output, and OpenAI assigns to you any rights it has in that output. That applies on every plan, free included, with no watermark or commercial-use carve-out in the terms. The one caveat is that output may not be unique, and the assignment does not cover similar output other users receive.

What ChatGPT is, and which plan the fine print points to
ChatGPT is OpenAI's chat assistant. The personal lineup now has five rungs: Free, Go, Plus, and three Pro tiers. Teams get a separate Business plan with Standard and Premium seats. We did not test the product. This review covers what OpenAI's pricing page, help center and Terms of Use say as of November 4, 2026.
Read the documents and Plus at $20 a month comes out as the honest middle. Go at $8 is cheaper, but OpenAI says it may include ads and it does not include the GPT-5.6 Sol model. Pro starts at $100, and the extra money mostly buys bigger Codex and ChatGPT Work allowances, which are measured in ways that are hard to predict in advance.
Where the money goes
All personal plans bill monthly only. The help center says plainly that annual billing and paying several months ahead are not supported for Go, Plus or Pro. Business is the only self-serve plan with an annual discount ($20 instead of $25 per Standard seat, $100 instead of $125 per Premium seat), and it needs at least two seats.
One practical snag: when we loaded the pricing page it redirected to a localized version and showed prices in euros. The dollar figures in this review come from OpenAI's own help articles, which list USD prices. On Go, OpenAI calls $8 an indicative US price that varies by market.
Watch the add-ons too. Credits bought on top of a personal plan last 12 months, then expire. The API credits bundled with Pro expire at the end of each billing cycle, and OpenAI says it can change or withdraw that perk.
Cancelling is easy, getting money back is not
Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep access until the period ends. Refunds are another matter. The help center opens with "payments are generally non-refundable" and then lists narrow exceptions:
- a verified billing error, an unauthorized charge, or a documented OpenAI service failure;
- a discretionary refund on an individual plan if you write within seven days of the charge and have not used it substantially;
- statutory windows: 14 days prorated in the EU, UK and Turkey, plus specific rules for Korea and Brazil.
If you subscribed through Apple, you have to ask Apple. If a refund is granted, access tied to that charge normally ends straight away. For a US buyer, the realistic reading is that a monthly plan is a sunk cost once you start using it.
Your chats and model training
The data-controls article is clear: on personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts, sharing for model training is on by default. You switch it off under Settings, Data controls, "Improve the model for everyone", and your chat history stays. Three details are easy to miss. Voice mode has its own training toggle. Codex has a separate setting for environment data. And rating a reply with a thumbs up or down can send the whole conversation to training even after you opt out.
Temporary chats skip both history and training but may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. If confidentiality matters, a Business workspace is the cleaner route: OpenAI says it does not train on workspace data by default.
Who owns what ChatGPT writes
This is the strongest part of the contract. The US Terms of Use say you own the output and that OpenAI assigns you whatever rights it holds in it. That holds on the free plan too. The terms add no watermark rule and no paid-plan condition for commercial use. The only caveat is that the output is not guaranteed to be unique, so another user may receive something similar. Whether AI output can be copyrighted at all is a separate legal question that the terms do not settle for you.
Head-to-head
FAQ
Can I get a refund on ChatGPT Plus?
Only in narrow cases. OpenAI may grant a discretionary refund if you ask within seven days of the charge and have not used the plan substantially; EU, UK and Turkey residents get a prorated refund within 14 days.
Does ChatGPT train on my conversations?
On personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts, yes by default. You can turn off 'Improve the model for everyone' in Data controls, but rating a reply can still send that conversation to training.
Is there an annual ChatGPT Plus plan?
No. OpenAI's help center says Go, Plus and Pro are billed monthly only. Annual billing exists only for Business and Enterprise.
Can I use ChatGPT output commercially?
The Terms of Use say you own the output and OpenAI assigns its rights to you, with no paid-plan condition. Output may not be unique to you.
Do ChatGPT credits expire?
Credits bought on personal plans are valid for 12 months from purchase and do not roll over after that. API credits included with Pro expire at the end of each billing cycle.
