Our verdict

Claude has some of the clearest pricing in the category and gives you the rights to what it writes. The refund policy is where it gets stingy: outside the EEA, UK and a handful of countries, the consumer terms make payments non-refundable. The 5-hour and weekly caps are also deliberately unquantified. Pro is the safe buy; only move to Max or Ultra after you have actually hit Pro's limits.

Good fit if you…

  • Long writing and analysis work where you want clear output ownership
  • Developers who want Claude Code included in a chat subscription
  • Buyers who prefer an annual discount on the entry paid plan

Skip it if you…

  • You need a refund window as a US customer
  • You want a published message count before paying
  • You will not remember to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal

The fine print, graded

Five questions, graded A (best for you) to E from Anthropic's own pages. How grades work.

A

Pricing clarity · Are prices public and free of traps?

The pricing page shows every individual and team price in US dollars. It says plainly that prices exclude applicable taxes. Pro is $20 monthly or $17 a month on annual billing, which means $200 charged up front. Max ($100) and Ultra ($200) are monthly only. Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage at API rates, billed annually with a 20-seat minimum, so its real cost depends on how much you use.

Cancel & refunds · Can you leave, and get money back?

The Consumer Terms state that, except as the terms provide or where law requires, all payments are non-refundable. To avoid renewal you must cancel at least 24 hours before the last day of the term. You keep access until the paid period ends. The EEA and UK get a prorated refund within 14 days, and Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan get a 7-day right to cancel. The help center offers a refund-eligibility check but publishes no window for US buyers.

Limits & credits · What is capped, and do credits expire?

Paid plans have a 5-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Max and Ultra add a separate weekly limit for Fable. None comes with a number of messages. Anthropic also reserves the right to add weekly or monthly caps or to limit specific models and features at its discretion. Usage credits let you keep going at API rates, and in most countries they do not expire (in Japan they expire after six months). The monthly API credits included with Max, Ultra and Team expire at the end of each billing cycle and cannot be refunded.

Your data · Is your content used to train models?

On consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max) you choose whether your chats and coding sessions are used to train models, and the pricing page lists training as something you can switch off. If you allow it, de-identified data can stay in training pipelines for up to 5 years. Deleted chats leave back-end storage within 30 days. Chats flagged for policy violations can be kept for 2 years, and anything you send through thumbs-up or thumbs-down is kept for 5 years. Turning training off does not pull your data out of models already trained. Team plans do not train on your content by default.

Output rights · Can you use what you make commercially?

The Consumer Terms say you keep your rights in your inputs and that Anthropic assigns to you all of its right, title and interest, if any, in the outputs, as long as you comply with the terms. The terms set no paid-plan condition for commercial use and impose no watermark. Anthropic does warn that outputs can be inaccurate and should be checked before you rely on them.

User reviews · What do paying users report?

App and software-review users like Claude (5.0 from 1,083 Product Hunt reviews, 4.7 from about 296,000 App Store ratings, 4.6 on G2, 4.5 on Google Play), but Trustpilot is harsh at 1.5 from 2,115 reviews. The most repeated complaint is tight, opaque usage limits, followed by billing trouble, account locks and bot-only support. The most repeated praise is clear writing, careful reasoning and strong coding help.

What Claude is and how the plans stack up

Claude is Anthropic's assistant, sold to individuals as Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, and to organizations as Team and Enterprise. We did not test it. What follows is a reading of the pricing page, the Consumer Terms of Service, and Anthropic's help and privacy centers as they stood on November 4, 2026.

The ladder is easy to follow. Pro ($20 a month, or $200 a year) gets you Claude Code, Projects and Research. Max ($100) gives five times Pro's usage. Ultra ($200) gives ten times Pro's weekly usage and, for verified accounts, removes the 5-hour cap. Max and Ultra also include monthly API credits for building on Anthropic's developer platform: $100 and $200 respectively.

The renewal rule to put in your calendar

The clause most likely to cost you money is in the Consumer Terms: cancel at least 24 hours before the last day of your term, or the next period is charged. The terms give an example. Subscribe on January 25 and you must cancel by February 23. If you miss that cutoff, the terms say fees are not refunded, though you keep access until the period ends.

The refund policy itself is short. All payments are non-refundable unless the terms say otherwise or the law requires it. Customers in the EEA and UK can get a refund within 14 days, prorated by use. Residents of Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan have a 7-day right to cancel. For everyone else, the help center offers an eligibility check through the support messenger but promises nothing. Upgrading from an individual plan to Team is the one case where Anthropic issues a prorated refund automatically.

How the usage limits work

Anthropic does not sell messages. It sells a share of compute. On paid plans that share resets every five hours, with a weekly ceiling on top. Max and Ultra also have a separate weekly cap for Fable, Anthropic's top model. How quickly you hit a limit depends on the model, the length of the conversation and the size of your files. Claude Code shares the same pool as chat, so a long terminal session eats into the allowance you would otherwise use for chat.

The help center also states that Anthropic may limit usage in other ways, including weekly and monthly caps or limits on specific models and features, at its discretion, and it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. If you need more, you can enable usage credits, which bill at standard API rates against a prepaid balance and a monthly spend cap you set. Those credits don't expire in most countries. The monthly API credits on Max and Ultra are a different bucket: they work only on the developer platform and expire at the end of each billing cycle.

What happens to your conversations

Training on consumer accounts depends on a setting called "Help improve Claude" under Settings, Privacy. Read the retention numbers before you decide:

  • with training allowed, de-identified chats can stay in training pipelines for up to 5 years;
  • deleted chats disappear from history at once and from back-end storage within 30 days;
  • chats flagged by safety systems are kept up to 2 years, and their classification scores up to 7 years;
  • feedback you submit with the thumbs buttons is kept for 5 years.

Switching training off stops future use but cannot remove data from models already trained. Incognito chats are excluded from training whatever the setting. For work data, Team plans don't train on your content by default.

Ownership of what Claude produces

The Consumer Terms assign to you whatever rights Anthropic holds in the outputs, as long as you follow the terms, and you keep your rights in what you put in. Nothing in the terms restricts commercial use to paid plans or adds a watermark. The terms also say you should not rely on outputs without checking them, which matters more than ownership for most business uses.

Head-to-head

FAQ

Can I get a refund on Claude Pro?

Anthropic's Consumer Terms say payments are non-refundable except where the terms or the law say otherwise. EEA and UK customers can get a prorated refund within 14 days; others can run the eligibility check in the help messenger, with no guaranteed outcome.

When do I need to cancel Claude to avoid being charged again?

At least 24 hours before the last day of your current term, according to the Consumer Terms. You keep access until the paid period ends.

Does Claude train on my chats?

On consumer plans it depends on your 'Help improve Claude' privacy setting, which you can switch off. If allowed, de-identified data may be kept for up to 5 years for training; Incognito chats are never used.

Do Claude usage credits expire?

Pay-as-you-go usage credits don't expire in most countries; in Japan they expire six months after purchase. The monthly API credits included with Max, Ultra and Team expire at the end of each billing cycle.

Is there an annual Claude Max plan?

No. Max and Ultra are billed monthly. Only Pro offers annual billing, at $200 paid up front.
