Our verdict

Gemini is good value if you already pay Google for storage: AI Pro at $19.99 bundles 5 TB and YouTube Premium Lite with the assistant. The weak spot is privacy. With the default Keep Activity setting on, your chats feed Google's model training and human review, and reviewed chats survive deletion for three years. Turn Keep Activity off, or use temporary chats, for anything sensitive.

Good fit if you…

  • People who already pay for Google One storage
  • Heavy Gmail, Docs and Android users who want Gemini built in
  • Budget buyers who want a paid tier under $5

Skip it if you…

  • You want your chats kept out of training and human review by default
  • You expect a refund for an unused part of the month
  • You need fixed, published usage numbers

The fine print, graded

Five questions, graded A (best for you) to E from Google's own pages. How grades work.

B

Pricing clarity · Are prices public and free of traps?

The US subscriptions page lists every personal plan in dollars: AI Plus $4.99, AI Pro $19.99, and Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99 depending on whether you take 5x or 20x AI Pro usage. The plans are bundles, so storage, YouTube and Google Home perks come in the same price, which helps if you would buy them anyway. Google notes that local prices vary and that you must be 18 or older for Google AI plans. The page we read shows no annual option.

D

Cancel & refunds · Can you leave, and get money back?

The subscriptions page says you can cancel anytime but gives no refunds for partial billing periods, except where the law requires it. The Google One terms add that you keep access until the end of the current billing period and that refunds go through the seller's refund policy. Neither page sets out a refund window for US customers.

C

Limits & credits · What is capped, and do credits expire?

Gemini moved to compute-based limits that refresh every 5 hours until you hit a weekly cap. How much you get depends on prompt complexity, the features you use and how long the chat runs. Paid tiers are defined only as multiples: 2x and 4x the standard limit for AI Plus and AI Pro, and 5x or 20x AI Pro for Ultra. Media generation, Deep Research and the Pro model use the allowance faster. The Google One terms say AI credits can expire after a period set when you acquire them and may be forfeited if you cancel.

D

Your data · Is your content used to train models?

While Keep Activity is on, Google says it uses your activity to provide and improve its services, including training generative AI models, with help from human reviewers. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, and you can change that. Chats seen by reviewers are disconnected from your account and kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. With Keep Activity off, or in temporary chats, conversations are held for 72 hours and are not used for training unless you send feedback.

B

Output rights · Can you use what you make commercially?

Gemini Apps are governed by the Google Terms of Service and the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy. The US terms say that when a service lets you generate original content, Google won't claim ownership over it. That is a promise not to claim ownership rather than an explicit assignment of rights, and the terms add no paid-plan condition for commercial use.

User reviews · What do paying users report?

Opinion is split: app stores and business-review sites are positive (4.7 from about 2.4 million App Store ratings, 4.6 on Capterra, 4.5 on Google Play, 4.4 on G2), while Trustpilot sits at 1.4 from 1,436 reviews. The most repeated complaints are confident wrong answers and instructions or earlier details being ignored, plus weak voice-assistant replacement for Google Assistant. The most repeated praise is fast everyday answers and tight Google integration.

Recurring complaints

  • Confident wrong answers and invented sources, sometimes repeated after being corrected
  • Ignores explicit instructions and forgets details given earlier in the chat
  • As a Google Assistant replacement, voice commands, timers and smart-home controls often fail
  • Paid subscribers hit limits or miss features they expected, and cancelling is frustrating
  • Generic or inconsistent replies, according to G2 reviewers

What users like

  • Quick, practical answers to everyday questions, often instead of a web search
  • Works well with Gmail, Drive and other Google apps
  • Voice and camera input make it easy to ask about what is on screen or in front of you
  • Generous free tier and good image generation

Ratings are the platforms' own figures on the date shown. Review sites attract unhappy customers and some vendors invite happy ones, so we average platforms instead of trusting one. How the user grade works.

What you actually buy with a Google AI plan

You don't subscribe to "Gemini" alone. Google sells Google AI plans (Plus, Pro and Ultra) that sit on top of Google One and package the Gemini app with cloud storage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, credits for the Flow video studio, and, on the higher tiers, YouTube Premium and Google Home Premium. We did not test the service. This review reads the US subscriptions page, the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, the Gemini help center, the Google One terms and the Google Terms of Service as of November 4, 2026.

That bundling matters for the math. If you already pay for 2 TB or more of storage, AI Pro at $19.99 may cost only slightly more than you spend today. If you don't need storage, you are paying for perks you may never use.

Billing, cancellation and the refund gap

The rule is printed in small type at the bottom of the subscriptions page: cancel anytime, but no refunds for partial billing periods unless the law requires one. The Google One terms add that you keep access until the end of the current period, that refund requests go to whoever sold you the plan (Google Play, for example), and that Google gives at least 30 days' notice before a price increase.

If you cancel, read the line about credits. The Google One terms say unused AI credits may be forfeited when you terminate or cancel the plan. Spend them before you leave. The same terms say AI credits can expire after a period set when you acquire them, so check the date shown on each grant rather than assuming they last.

Limits measured in multiples

Since the May 2026 change, the Gemini app uses compute-based limits. Your allowance refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. The help center describes the paid tiers only relative to each other: 2x the standard limit for AI Plus, 4x for AI Pro, and 5x or 20x AI Pro for the two Ultra options. Google never publishes the baseline those multiples apply to.

Heavy features use the allowance faster. Google names media generation, Deep Research, the Pro model and extended thinking. Higher effort settings also burn more of your limit. If you plan to make video, check the Flow credit amounts on the plan card (200, 1,000, 10,000 or 25,000) rather than counting on the chat allowance.

The Keep Activity switch decides almost everything

One setting controls most of what happens to your data. With Keep Activity on, Google says it uses your chats, uploads and related data to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and that human reviewers, some working for service providers, read a subset of conversations. The Privacy Hub asks you not to enter anything confidential you wouldn't want a reviewer to see.

  • Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; you can choose 3 or 36 months, or keep it indefinitely.
  • Chats that reviewers have seen are kept for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete your activity.
  • With Keep Activity off, or in a temporary chat, conversations are held for 72 hours and are not used to train Google's models unless you send feedback.

Audio and Gemini Live video or screen shares are not used for improvement by default. Work and school accounts fall under separate Workspace terms.

Rights in what Gemini generates

The Google Terms of Service, which apply to Gemini Apps, say Google won't claim ownership over original content you generate. That is less explicit than an assignment clause, but it leaves no room for Google to claim your output, and nothing in the terms ties commercial use to a paid tier. You still have to follow the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy and respect other people's rights in anything you upload.
