Our verdict
HeyGen's pricing page is easy to follow and its credit rollover is decent, but the legal side tilts toward the vendor. Refunds are discretionary, the paid-plan license lets HeyGen train its models on your footage and voice, and opting out means emailing its privacy team. Commercial use is fine on paid plans; on the free plan it is explicitly off limits. Buy monthly, email the opt-out on day one if your face or client content is involved.
Good fit if you…
- Marketers producing avatar videos with commercial rights
- Teams that want SSO, SCORM export and a shared credit pool
- Creators who publish monthly and benefit from one-month rollover
Skip it if you…
- You need a guaranteed refund window
- You do not want your likeness used for model training by default
- You plan to monetize videos from the free plan
The fine print, graded
Five questions, graded A (best for you) to E from HeyGen's own pages. How grades work.
Pricing clarity · Are prices public and free of traps?
Plans are listed in dollars with a yearly toggle advertised as '2 months free'. The pricing page does not name the billing currency. Two cost traps: Business seats cost $20 a month each but add no credits, since they share one pool, and the Pro plan is really a ladder of credit tiers from $49 (1,000 credits) to $4,300 (100,000 credits) a month.
SourceCancel & refunds · Can you leave, and get money back?
The Terms say payments are non-refundable except where required by law. The help centre allows that HeyGen and Google Play purchases 'may be refunded within 15 days' (14 days for Apple), but reviews requests case by case, may refuse if a significant amount of credits has been used, and typically will not reimburse months of a forgotten subscription. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access to the end of the cycle.
SourceLimits & credits · What is capped, and do credits expire?
On monthly billing, unused credits carry over one extra cycle; on annual billing they accumulate until the renewal date, and the oldest credits are spent first. Moving to Free forfeits them. Creator and Pro users cannot buy one-off credit packs and must upgrade; only Business can buy extras at $0.05 a credit. The help centre does not publish per-feature credit rates and says costs are shown in the product before you generate.
SourceYour data · Is your content used to train models?
For paid plans, the Terms grant HeyGen a royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, worldwide and irrevocable license to your content, including to train or improve its AI and machine-learning models. The privacy policy lists text, voice, scripts, images and videos as inputs used to train its models, on a legitimate-interest basis. There is no settings toggle: you opt out by contacting HeyGen's privacy team. Deletion requests are handled within 72 hours, with backups kept 60 days.
SourceOutput rights · Can you use what you make commercially?
On paid plans you own your input and output, HeyGen assigns any rights it acquires in the output to you, and commercial use is allowed. Free plan output is only licensed to you, revocably, for personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation purposes, so no ads, client work or monetized posts. You also need permission from anyone whose face or voice you upload.

User reviews · What do paying users report?
Users rate HeyGen well everywhere we looked: 4.2 on Trustpilot from 5,150 reviews, 4.8 on G2, 4.7 on Capterra and 4.8 on the iPhone app from about 31K ratings. The most repeated praise is how easy it is to turn a script into a video with natural-looking avatars and voices. The most repeated complaint is credits: they run out quickly, it is hard to tell what each generation costs, and a few users were charged after canceling.
| Platform | Rating | Reviews | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 4.2/5 | 5,150 | November 5, 2026 |
| G2 · figure from the search listing | 4.8/5 | 1,975 | November 5, 2026 |
| Capterra · figure from the search listing | 4.7/5 | 320 | November 5, 2026 |
| Apple App Store | 4.8/5 | 31,000 | November 5, 2026 |
Recurring complaints
- Credits run out quickly and the cost of each generation is unclear, so heavy users find it expensive
- Some users were charged after canceling or found the cancellation steps unclear
- Frequent interface changes and updates that break features people relied on
- Results sometimes miss the prompt or need fixes to pronunciation and pacing, which costs more tries
- Support is uneven: some users bounced between agents without a fix
What users like
- Easy to learn, even for people with no video-editing background
- Avatars and voices look and sound natural
- Saves the time and cost of filming, including for videos in several languages
- Fast turnaround from script to finished video for marketing, training and social content
Ratings are the platforms' own figures on the date shown. Review sites attract unhappy customers and some vendors invite happy ones, so we average platforms instead of trusting one. How the user grade works.

How HeyGen's plans are put together
HeyGen runs on credits. Some features charge per minute of output, others a flat amount per generation, and the help centre says the cost is displayed before you hit generate. The plans are built around those credits:
- Free: no credits, just a small video quota (1 to 3 videos depending on region), 1-minute videos and a watermark.
- Creator: 600 credits a month for $29, or $24 a month on yearly billing, 1 seat, videos up to 30 minutes and 1080p export.
- Pro: starts at 1,000 credits for $49 and scales to 100,000 credits for $4,300 a month, with 4K export.
- Business: $149 a month for 1,500 credits shared across the workspace, plus $20 per extra seat.
The thing to notice on Business is that seats do not bring credits. Adding five colleagues adds $100 a month and zero extra generation capacity.
Credit rollover, top-ups and pausing
HeyGen's rollover is reasonable. Monthly subscribers keep unused credits for one additional billing cycle. Annual subscribers receive credits monthly and those accumulate until the yearly renewal date. Credits closest to expiry are used first.
What you cannot do on Creator or Pro is buy a one-off credit pack. If you run dry mid-month, the help centre's answer is to upgrade (or move up a Pro tier). Only Business accounts can buy extra credits, at $5 per 100, with optional auto-reload. If you need a break, a pause pushes your next charge back 30 days without cancelling. Cancel instead, and your remaining credits are lost when the account moves to Free.
Refunds: discretionary, and shrinking once you generate
Read the two documents side by side. The Terms of Service state that payments are non-refundable, except where required by law. The help centre then describes a window: purchases made through HeyGen or Google Play may be refunded within 15 days, Apple App Store purchases within 14. But it frames refunds as limited, case-by-case decisions that may be refused if a significant amount of credits has already been used.
The practical reading: if you subscribed by mistake and have not rendered anything, ask quickly through live chat or support@heygen.com with your invoice. If you have already produced videos, assume the money is spent. And if you discover months of charges for an account you forgot, the help centre says HeyGen typically will not reimburse all of them.
Your face, your voice and HeyGen's license
This is the clause that should slow you down. When you are on a paid plan, the Terms give HeyGen a license to your content that is royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, worldwide and irrevocable, and it explicitly covers using that content to train or improve HeyGen's AI and machine-learning models. The license survives termination.
The privacy policy confirms that text, voice, scripts, images and videos may be used to train and enhance its models, under legitimate interest rather than consent. You can request an opt-out by contacting HeyGen's privacy address listed in the policy; there is no switch in the app. Avatar creation also involves biometric processing, which HeyGen covers in a separate Biometric Information Privacy Notice and handles with explicit consent at creation time.
If you are building a digital twin of yourself or a client, send the opt-out request before you upload footage.
Who can use the videos, and how
Paid plans are straightforward: you own input and output, HeyGen assigns any rights it acquires in the output to you, and commercial use is permitted, though HeyGen disclaims liability for it. The free plan is different. Output is licensed to you on a limited, revocable basis for personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation purposes only. Disputes go to individual AAA arbitration under California law, with a 30-day window to opt out after you first use the service. The Terms we read show a last update of October 16, 2026.
Head-to-head
FAQ
Does HeyGen give refunds?
The Terms say payments are non-refundable except where the law requires. The help centre says purchases may be refunded within 15 days (14 for Apple) at HeyGen's discretion, and may be refused if many credits were used.
Do HeyGen credits roll over?
Yes, partly. Monthly plans carry unused credits into one more billing cycle, and annual plans accumulate credits until the renewal date. Credits are lost if you cancel to Free.
Can I use HeyGen free videos commercially?
No. The Terms limit free-plan output to personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use. Commercial use requires a paid plan.
Does HeyGen train AI on my avatar and voice?
The paid-plan Terms and the privacy policy allow HeyGen to use your content to train its models. You can request an opt-out by contacting HeyGen's privacy team.
Can I buy extra HeyGen credits?
Only on Business, at $5 per 100 credits. Creator and Pro users have to upgrade to a bigger plan or Pro tier.
