Our verdict

Descript writes its rules down clearly, which is more than most of its peers do. The data setup is the best part: a visible toggle keeps your recordings out of AI work, and Descript says its production models use no user data. The money rules are tight, though. Plan refunds must be requested within 48 hours of the invoice, allowances reset every month, and top-ups are non-refundable. Fine for steady weekly production, poor for occasional users.

Good fit if you…

  • Podcasters and YouTubers editing through transcripts every week
  • Teams that want a clear AI-training opt-out
  • Creators who need watermark-free 1080p export from $16 a month

Skip it if you…

  • You need more than two days to decide on a refund
  • You edit irregularly and would waste a monthly allowance
  • You need top-ups on the cheapest paid plan

The fine print, graded

Five questions, graded A (best for you) to E from Descript's own pages. How grades work.

B

Pricing clarity · Are prices public and free of traps?

Prices are public, in dollars and per person, with yearly billing advertised as saving up to 35% over monthly. Creator and Business seats are billed separately, so a three-person Creator team pays three times. The pricing page does not mention taxes, and paid plans are charged automatically to a card on the chosen cycle.

C

Cancel & refunds · Can you leave, and get money back?

The refund policy is explicit but short: plan refunds must be requested within 48 hours of the invoice date, Editor seat refunds within 7 days, and top-ups are not refundable. Cancelling, downgrading or switching from annual to monthly takes effect at the end of the cycle, with no proration or refund for unused time.

C

Limits & credits · What is capped, and do credits expire?

Media minutes (uploads and recordings) and AI credits (Underlord, Studio Sound, Green Screen and similar) reset at each renewal, and the help centre says unused amounts do not roll over. Top-ups, sold only on Creator and Business from $25 for 5 media hours or $35 for 350 AI credits, last 12 months and are spent after the plan allowance. Free plan AI credits are a one-time 100.

B

Your data · Is your content used to train models?

The Terms allow Descript to use inputs and outputs to train its models unless you opt out. The help centre explains how: App Settings, Profile tab, 'Share data with Descript'. It adds that current production models use no Descript user data and that opted-out users' data will not be used at any stage. Users are asked for a preference at onboarding; Enterprise drives have sharing disabled by default.

B

Output rights · Can you use what you make commercially?

Descript claims no ownership of your content, and you own AI output to the extent the law protects it, with a warning that generated output may not be unique. Free exports carry a watermark at 720p. Stock libraries other than Storyblocks may need a separate license for commercial use, and voice clones require the speaker's explicit consent.

What users say about Descript

C

User reviews · What do paying users report?

Opinion splits: G2 and Capterra both rate Descript 4.6, but Trustpilot sits at 2.6 from 292 reviews. The most repeated complaint is that the AI features are unreliable (cut words, audio drift, edits to redo), use up paid credits, and come with crashes and a sluggish editor. The most repeated praise is the core idea: editing audio and video by editing the transcript, with fast, accurate transcription that saves podcasters real time.

Recurring complaints

  • AI edits are unreliable: deleted words or sections, audio drifting out of sync, results that need manual fixing
  • Credits get used up by failed or unwanted AI edits, and AI credit limits feel tight
  • Crashes during export, freezes, lag and lost edits; the app feels resource-heavy
  • Canceling is hard to find, and some users report trouble getting refunds or charges after a trial
  • The interface has a learning curve and menus are confusing

What users like

  • Editing audio and video by editing the text transcript saves a lot of time
  • Transcription is quick and accurate
  • Filler-word and silence removal speed up podcast work
  • Human support staff were helpful when users reached them

  • Descript says current production AI models use no user data
  • Refund windows are spelled out in days

Cons

  • Plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice
  • Media minutes and AI credits do not roll over
  • Top-ups are non-refundable and not sold on Hobbyist
  • Seats on Creator and Business are billed per person
  • Terms allow training on your content unless you opt out

Two meters run at once

Descript bills usage on two separate counters, and both matter. Media minutes (shown as media hours on the pricing page) count audio and video you upload or record, including Rooms sessions; still images count as one second each. AI credits are spent on the AI tools: Underlord, Studio Sound, Green Screen and the rest. Chatting with Underlord costs credits too, and when it runs a tool you pay for both its reasoning and the tool's work.

The allowances step up with each plan: 1 media hour and a one-time 100 AI credits on Free, 10 hours and 400 credits a month on Hobbyist, 30 hours and 800 credits on Creator, 40 hours and 1,500 credits on Business. Each Editor seat adds to a shared pool for the Drive.

No rollover, but top-ups last a year

The help centre is unambiguous: allowances reset when your subscription renews, and unused media minutes and AI credits do not roll over. A slow month is simply lost value.

Top-ups soften this, but only on Creator and Business. Prices from the help centre:

  • AI credits: 350 for $35, 1,000 for $80, 4,000 for $200.
  • Media minutes: 5 hours for $25, 20 hours for $80, 50 hours for $150.

Top-ups expire 12 months after purchase, are used only after the plan allowance runs out, and are non-refundable. If you are on Hobbyist and run short, the only route is an upgrade.

The refund clock is very short

Descript's refund policy uses three different windows, and the main one is tight. A refund on a plan must be requested within 48 hours of the invoice date. An Editor seat added to a Drive can be refunded within 7 days, on request from the Drive owner. Top-ups cannot be refunded at all.

Downgrades and cancellations wait for the end of the cycle and do not prorate, so cancelling an annual plan in month two still leaves you paying for the year. Upgrades, by contrast, apply immediately with the remaining time credited. If an annual auto-renewal surprises you, you have two days to act: contact support from your account email.

Training on your recordings: find the toggle

On paper, the Terms of Service let Descript use your inputs and outputs to train and improve its models unless you have opted out. In practice the help centre describes a visible control: open App Settings, go to the Profile tab and switch off Share data with Descript. Users are prompted to set this during onboarding, so check what you chose.

Descript also states that its current production models use no Descript user data and that it has no plans to use opted-out users' data. Third-party AI providers are barred by contract from training on your inputs and outputs. One nuance in the Terms: audio used to train an AI voice may be added to de-identified research datasets.

Ownership and commercial use

Descript claims no ownership of your content. For AI-generated material, you own it to the extent the law allows, and the Terms caution that output may not be unique. Stock media is where to be careful: Storyblocks clips come with a commercial EULA, but the Terms say other libraries may not be available for commercial use without a license. Cloning a voice requires the speaker's explicit consent. Disputes go to individual AAA arbitration, with a 30-day opt-out after you accept the Terms, which were last updated February 25, 2025.

Bottom line: Descript is one of the few tools here whose documents answer the obvious questions in plain numbers: 48 hours, 7 days, 12 months. That clarity cuts both ways. If you edit every week, the monthly reset barely matters and the data toggle gives you real control. If you edit a few times a year, you will pay for allowances you never use, and the refund window will have closed long before you notice.

Head-to-head
